The, admittedly elitist, but unsparing truth about education in the context of the problems of our time.
You want to improve the state of humanity? Then you need people with university degrees and preferably doctorates. Otherwise, you will not succeed in curing cancer or setting off for the stars with a fusion drive. We (as humanity) need extraordinary breakthroughs in every field of science: biology, astrophysics, medicine, computer science, and so on. This cannot be accomplished with regular school degrees.
The problem with this is that a relevant education at elite universities such as Harvard or MIT is very expensive and places are limited (not only for capacity reasons). There are about 10 million PHDs in the world, but 8 billion people. How many of these 8 billion people could manage a PHD or would like to have one? 500 million? 1 billion? How do you go from currently 10 million people extremely well educated and highly specialized to 1 billion?
How do you give an education that costs millions to a billion people?
It doesn't make economic sense to pay every single person a scholarship worth millions. Even if you had 1 quadrillion and invested it in the subject, there would still be the problem of capacity. All universities together cannot educate a billion people under any circumstances.
The solution is to dematerialize the books, professors and learning experience and deliver it in digital form as on-demand streaming services (computer generated education). This way, the best professors can deliver billions of lectures per day and you create education without borders for all, detached from the constraints of the real world.
